I see that Kathleen posted a link for the current call for NCURA International Fellows, so I just wanted to take a moment to briefly share my experience as an NCURA Fellow at the Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Stockholm this past March.
I spent 2 weeks in the Grants Office at KI, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that it was a once in a lifetime experience. It was amazing to be so completely welcomed into the office. Everyone was so willing to share information, explain what they do, and ask me questions about what I do. I met with each person in the Grant Office and in the larger Researcher Support Office (which includes Career Services and Visiting Researcher Services in addition to the Grants Office) to find out what their jobs entail in general and on a day-to-day basis.
My KI hosts arranged about 3 meetings a day with people in offices ranging from KI central administration leadership to internal audits to finance. I also attended a few previously scheduled events each week such as a Career Day for Biomedicine Masters Students and a meeting that the RSO office holds for the department administrators on campus. My hosts allowed me enough time to reflect on what I was learning and were very willing to answer questions that arose through these interactions. They also arranged dinners and touring opportunities after work hours and on the weekend, all of which were wonderful. Now that I'm back in the office here at UMB, I see how my experience as an NCURA fellow has opened my eyes to other ways of approaching issues and has broadened my worldview. Oh, and my experience with the fabulous people I met and with the city itself has me dying to go back to Stockholm!
So, if the fellowship program is something that interests you, I encourage you to go to the link in Kathleen's post and apply! If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. This is still my current favorite topic!
And for those of you attending the PRA conference in Vancouver in July, I'll be participating in a session about the fellowship program. If you're interested, please stop by to hear more about being a fellow and about being a host institution.
Thanks,
Amanda
