  • 1.  Update on Swiss Participation in Horizon 2020

    This message has been cross posted to the following Discussions: Pre-Award and International Community .
    -------------------------------------------
    Because of the Swiss referendum results on February 9th, 2014, in which Switzerland refused to open its borders to citizens from the newest member countries of the European Union, Switzerland is no longer considered an "Associated Country" of the European Union for the purposes of Horizon 2020's research funding.

    Thus, Swiss entities no longer enjoy automatic eligibility to receive Horizon 2020 research funding, and having a Swiss entity as a part of a research consortium does not count towards having the required number of European Union entities.

    For all intents and purposes, Switzerland is considered a "Third Country" like the U.S. in terms of participating in Horizon 2020 research funding.  It is welcome and encouraged to do so, but it is eligible to receive Horizon 2020 research funding only on an exceptional, case-by-case basis.

    Please see the European Commission's official communication about Switzerland's status:

    1.  Go to:  http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/docs/h2020-funding-guide/cross-cutting-issues/international-cooperation_en.htm
    2.  Click on "Information on Swiss participation in Horizon 2020", or http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/other/hi/h2020-hi-swiss-part_en.pdf

    Thus, if any of our U.S. researchers were counting exclusively on having a Swiss partner as a way to qualify for Horizon 2020, that will no longer be possible.

    Dear All

    It is true, that Switzerland has at the moment the status of a Third Country within Horizon2020. Nevertheless, Swiss Research Institutions can participate in Horizon2020 and also will get funding directly from Switzerland. So there is no barrier to include Swiss Researchers in proposals. In case you plan proposals with Swiss participants and are unsure, feel free to contact me directly.

    Best regards
    Agatha

    As of September 15, 2014, Switzerland will be able to participate in Horizon 2020 as an Associated Country (i.e., automatic eligibility for funding and counting towards the minimum number of participants required for a project) for the following programs:

    *  "Excellent Science"
    *  Calls with the specific objective of "spreading excellence and widening participation"
    *  Euratom
    *  Fusion energy research

    For more details, please see:  http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/other/hi/h2020-hi-swiss-part_en.pdf
