As part of our upcoming session "International Speed Dating: Building and Sustaining an International Network", to be presented at PRA 2021 Conference (March 23, 3:45 - 5:00pm EDT), Simon Kerridge and I will be discussing the hows and whys of building an international network of research administration peers.

One of the things we will discuss is the importance of reaching out and proactively developing your network.  NCURA's Collaborate forums offer a myriad of possibilities.
We will be asking everyone in attendance to use Collaborate to establish connections within the group.  Those not in attendance are also encouraged to join in.
If you see an interesting post, don't hesitate to reach out to that person!

We would love it if you would introduce yourselves with a post including your name, job, institution, expertise, and interests. Before posting, make sure you update your NCURA Collaborate profile.

    I'll begin!

Hi!  I am Melinda Fischer, a pre-award Grants Administrator and Manager of the Office of Research Services in the College of Education at Clemson University, in sunny South Carolina.  Clemson University is a land-grant, R1, public university in the upstate of SC. While Clemson's football is what keeps us in the US national eye, we also are known for our engineering, business, and education programs.  I've been in research administration for 11 years.

I'm no expert, but I do submit tons of foundation applications and am very familiar with the US Dept. of Education's policies, processes, and procedures.  I'm happy to discuss or share experience about these or related matters.

I'm also an avid whitewater kayaker and enjoy all things outdoors.

If you intend to join us on March 23, please introduce yourself on this thread.  Who knows who you might connect with?!

    Thanks Melinda!
Just a quick tip for others when you reply to add your info, don't select "Reply Privately" as, well, it will only be seen by one person, which rather defeats the whole object!
Anyway, I hope at least some of you will join us on the 23rd March for the extravaganza that will be "International Speed Dating".  Not only will we have a bit of fun, but we will also help you to leave the session with some new colleagues in your peer network - and who knows perhaps even an overseas person or two!!!

    So let me introduce myself.
I'm Simon Kerridge, Director of Research Policy & Support at the University of Kent in the UK.  Kent is a mid-sized research intensive university in the south east of England, with our main campus in the historic city of Canterbury.  We are probably best known for our social sciences, but I cover the institution as a whole.  Most of my time these days seems to be spent on "project" work - developing new policies and the such.  Recently I've done a lot on open access / open research, responsible metrics, research assessment, due diligence, and indeed research administration as a profession - if you have heard of RAAAP then that is my baby.  I'm very much an advocate of collaborative research and I guess I will be finding out more about Horizon Europe funding from outside the EU now that Brexit has actually happened, and so I will stay active in EARMA - the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators.
Melinda is, for sure, far more outdoorsy than me, but I do like a good walk with the dogs, and will always try to fit in an "escape room" on my travels - not that there have been many of those recently... *sigh*.

Thanks Melinda and Simon – I agree with Laura (so glad you visited us at UniMelb), this is a fabulous post. It's a great way to connect and reconnect with people and I'm looking forward to your PRA 2021 session.

I'm Bry (Bryony Wakefield) from Australia. I enjoy working as the Director, Research Development, in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. This means I get to work with a great group of people, providing support in the areas of research strategy, governance, collaboration and funding and research performance. I've been working in higher education for ~20 years. I thoroughly enjoy working in research administration/management and seeing our profession grow.

Post threads such as this are a reminder of how fortunate we are to be able to reach out, support and learn from each other. Also currently really enjoying Simon's tweets of his dog Violet and her three gorgeous puppies. On the personal side I enjoy gardening, going for walks, catching up with friends for good conversation/laughs - goodness, is this what real speed dating is like!

Look forward to seeing you in the virtual world at PRA.

Hi Laura!  Thanks for posting here!
It sounds like you've got your finger on the international pulse, I'm excited to see where this thread goes.

I have also been involved in large, multi-organizational USAID proposals--they are a bear, but exciting to work on!

    Thanks Melinda, and everyone

My name is Connie Killey, up until a year ago, when I did the unthinkable and married, I was Connie Mogg! The other unthinkable thing I did was change jobs during Covid, moving from my role as Director of Research and Revenue at Monash, to moving to Deakin to leading their new research finance function in August last year.

Compared to Monash, which, in the Australian context is a large university, Deakin is relatively new, still just squeezing in to the "universities under 50" bracket, and ranking very well in that cohort, and is considerably smaller than Monash. Deakin has a campus in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, only a short drive from Monash, and also has 2 large campuses in Geelong Victoria, a regional city with a population of under 300K, and a smaller campus in the regional town/city of Warrnambool.

Deakin has a strategy to grow its research considerably, and part of that is establishing better, more streamlined administrative support services for the researchers, so its an exciting time to be here. I have a team of 20 finance professionals, and my job is to get these guys excited about supporting research. to many of them its new, but they are a wonderful group and I love them already :).

I'm also on the Board of ARMS (Australasian Research Management Society), am one of their training fellows (research finance), and am the convener of the research finance special interest group (ARMS SIG).

Very much looking forward to getting to know you all better!
    Connie

Hi Connie!  You have had some big changes this year.  I think there should probably be a sub-group for RAs and supervisors to discuss training techniques and how to survive a job change during a pandemic!
Deakin sounds like an exciting place to be right now--on the cusp of great things!

Thanks so much for chiming in, we are glad you're here!  (I like both of your surnames, btw!)

Hi everyone! I am Marianna Gurtovnik, Director of Management Operations at the University of Texas Health Science Center, McGovern Medical School in Houston, Texas.  I have been a research administrator for more than 11 years (in various roles) and received my CRA last month.  Prior to becoming a research administrator, I worked for US government-funded international non-profits and a private international development contractor.  I grew up in the former Soviet Union; over the years, my work took me to Bulgaria, Poland, Czech Republic, South Africa and Uganda.  On a personal note, I like traveling and hope to resume it when COVID is over, reading historical novels and biographies and studying languages (currently working on perfecting my French).  I am married and have a son.

Hi everyone, this is such a great post - it's nice to "meet" you all!  My name is Carrie Manning, and I am an International Funding Manager at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.  I am very new to research administration, & the international funding landscape as a whole, so having forums and networks such as NCURA has been really helpful.  I've only been at Strathclyde for just over a year, but prior to that I have 10 years' experience working for non-profits in areas including income generation, business development and bid writing etc.  I've found that I love working for a university, but everyday really is a school day for me! :)  Strathclyde itself is an international technological university, established as 'the place of useful learning' in 1796, and works across areas including: Energy; Advanced Manufacturing & Materials; Measurement Science & Enabling Technologies; Ocean, Air & Space; Health & Wellbeing; Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Society & Policy.  My role is to support our academics across our 4 faculties (Engineering; Humanities & Social Sciences; Science; and Business) to identify and apply for international funding beyond the EU with a focus on North America & Asia.  So if anyone in these areas are keen to establish any research links/collaborations with Strathclyde please do get in touch!

Outside of work, I enjoy travelling (although sadly haven't been able to do much of that in this role due to Covid!); reading, photography and trying to upcycle furniture (I recently moved house & there really is nothing else to do in the midst of lockdown!)

Hoping everyone is safe and well and that we get to connect either online or in person soon.  Thanks, Carrie

    Hi everyone,

Looking forward to joining tomorrow's virtual PRA meeting - my name is Carolyn Fernandez, I am a Senior Grants Specialist for Internal Medicine, Department of Education at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. My research administration group currently oversees pre and postaward federal, foundation and industry grants and contracts for 6 of the 19 divisions under Internal Medicine (with a view to expanding to take on more). I have been in research administration for 6 years and although my focus is now largely on NIH, DoD, pharmaceutical and medical foundation grants, I also have prior experience with NSF, NASA, USGS and industry grants from my time at Saint Louis University. As the state's top R1 institution partnered with the #1 hospital in Missouri, Barnes Jewish Christian Hospital, locally WUSTL is often referred to as the 800lb research gorilla in the middle of St. Louis. Our faculty secure a huge variety of international collaborations around the world. We enjoy a wide reach!

Fun facts: I'm half Thai, half Iraqi, born and raised in London, England and have lived in the US with my husband for just over a decade. I have a rambunctious 11yr old miniature schnauzer named Heidi, who takes up a lot of my attention! Outside of doggy parenting, my hobbies involve international travel, running, lifting, hiking and paddleboarding. I graduated in 2000 with an undergraduate in English Studies but am now also taking my shot at a second Bachelor of Science in Psychology & Neurological Sciences. As if I'm not already busy enough! What's one more extra piece of baggage to carry!?

Simon - remind me to tell you about my fleeting membership at University of Kent in Canterbury :) :)

    Best,

    Carolyn

    Hi!

Looking forward to joining today's virtual PRA meeting.

I am Stefania E. Grotti, Head of Research Office at Politecnico di Milano, in Italy.

Politecnico di Milano is a public university established in 1863, which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers. Education is at bachelor, master and Ph.D. level.

Politecnico di Milano is a leading technological research university combining excellence in basic and theoretical research and first-rate research infrastructures that provide the possibility of a wide range of experimental, theoretical and modeling research. The main areas are of engineering, architecture and design. In 2021, the ranking "by Subject" listed the Politecnico di Milano among the world top 20 in all three specific areas: 20th in Engineering, 10th in Architecture, and 5th in Design. In the Italian panorama, the university confirms its position as the first technical university.

I've now 20 years of experience as a Research Manager at Politecnico di Milano, most of it as a Manager and Coordinator, with a strong focus on international aspects and networking.

During all these years I've worked on funding and financial management.

Thanks to a national and international experience on complex projects, I developed during these years extensive knowledge in the Organisational HR Field suitable for transnational and diverse Research Contexts (academic and industry).

I'm involved in several European and extra-EU networks covering active roles in Boards and other groups. Networking is my main focus and best practice exchange is my passion.

    Best
