  • 1.  ERC Synergy Grants

Hello! I am supporting a PI in developing a proposal as part of a 4-team consortium for the 2025 European Research Counsel (ERC) Synergy Grant opportunity.  Our Lead Institution is Oxford and our is the only university on the team that is outside of Europe. It is unclear to me based on their responses whether this will be administered as a subaward or a direct award to us as an American partner. Does anyone have experience with these grants? I'd like to know how they are administered at your institution.  I'm also curious how your institution handles the issue of the exchange rate given they fund in Euros.  Even though these are largely post-award questions, I am trying to get out ahead of future potential pitfalls so that things can be as smooth as possible if awarded.  Thanks in advance for any insights!

    Hi Julie,

Your best bet is to reach out directly to the research office at Oxford.  But normally an ERC grant is a single award to a PI, and so any involvement from other institutions will be made as sub-awards from the lead institution.  You'll need to create an agreement between yourselves and them.  You might be able to make that agreement in USD and they would then take the risk on the exchange rate (just as if they were buying a computer from a US supplier... they would pay the dollar price).

Bear in mind that the ERC grant will be awarded in Euro and Oxford will spend in GBP so they will already have exchange rate issues.

But – speak to your contact at the research office at Oxford.

    I hope that helps

    Simon

Hi Julie. I've dropped you a DM. I might be able to help with the exchange rate (and other) questions.
