Hello, NCURA Global Community Colleagues!
I'm curious if anyone has dealt with a Short-term Invitational Fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. This program provides living expense support for a researcher to do a residential collaboration at a host institution in Japan. A host PI submits the application on behalf of the visiting PI. The funds are to be used for the in-country expenses. No funds are provided for salary support.
However, I've found some disturbing terms in the award related to other active grants:
- “Fellows are not permitted to receive other fellowships during the tenure of their fellowships because it may interfere with the research performance of the JSPS fellowship program. If Fellows have accepted another fellowship, they must choose one of them and decline the others.”
- "During their tenure, Fellows must devote full time to their research at their [host] Institutions, and not engage in any other work or research.”
My (U.S.) PI tells me that the Host (Japan) PI states that these terms refer to other Japanese support outside the JSPS Fellowship and nothing else. But I'm haven't been able to get clarification yet from the sponsor about whether this is true or not.
I've confirmed with my PI that they will be on sabbatical during the fellowship.
But I'm concerned about management of effort on our person's other U.S. grants, which will be active during the JSPS Fellowship.
Has anyone worked with JSPS before and had to manage the effort of other grants during the time of the JSPS fellowship?
I appreciate any insights.
Thank you!
